EARTH Centre – Gauteng – “Creating HOPE through HORSES”
“For us at The EARTH Centre Sharon is a breath of fresh air. She is motivating, inspirational, fun and a pleasure to work with. We have been very blessed by her willingness to work with us and all the time she has given up in doing so, as well as following up thereafter. Sharon is very interested in what we do and in helping us to achieve our goals, she has opened our eyes and minds to other possibilities and avenues, increasing our awareness as well as encouraging us to think outside of the box. For us so far the alignments have smoothed edges to issues, taken the drama out of challenges and created a more positive and open outlook to our business and personal lives.”
The EARTH Centre was born out of the need to create ongoing funding for SARDA Gauteng. SARDA Gauteng had always relied solely on donations for its existence and these were becoming ever harder to secure even as overheads soared. The only practical solution seemed to be closure.
However some positive and creative thinking resulted in the concept of a Centre which not only embraced the SARDA ethic in providing free therapeutic riding for children who would not otherwise receive any kind of therapy, but which would also offer other types of equine assisted interventions on a charge basis to enable SARDA Gauteng to keep operating.
Thus the SARDA Centre became The EARTH Centre (Equine Assisted Riding, Therapy and Healing). SARDA Gauteng continues to operate as before. The need for more instructors is ongoing as demand for SARDA Gauteng’s services increases. However on the EARTH front, exciting change is in the air. To this end the Centre is undergoing a face-lift. This is more than merely cosmetic – it heralds a new dawn.
There is now improved signage at the gate, a new Office and Reception area has been installed and a new car park has been created. There is a 7 circuit Chartres labyrinth as well as horse labyrinth which has been designed to be ridden on horseback or pushed in a wheelchair or pram. The Sensory Trail is taking shape and the therapy ponies and donkeys are now being kept in open boarding. They have welcomed this new freer lifestyle, enabling work to begin on revamping the original brick stable block to accommodate a much needed training facility and treatment/consulting rooms which will be available to various therapists and practitioners.
There are weekly Hippotherapy sessions, Natural Horsemanship sessions are available and the two delightful miniature donkeys are being used in various Chat and Pat programmes. In time, Early Childhood Development classes will also be available for children aged 3-5 years and The EARTH Centre will be also be able to host Corporate Leadership Training events and have a Coffee Shop.
Through this growth phase, the target demographic will be expanded to embrace the elderly, at-risk youth, people with Autism and survivors of trauma, physical abuse, domestic violence and addictions. There will be regular coffee mornings, which is hoped will have an increased attendance, as well as traditional events such as the Annual Open Day.
